What to check before moving a heavy product

A planning checklist for the moves — delivery day and every move after. Numbers from the product page, route facts from your home, and help planned in advance.

This page is about planning, not technique. It will not tell you how to lift — it tells you what to have on paper before anyone lifts anything, so that the moving day is a sequence of known steps instead of an improvisation.

The numbers that plan the move

Three values, all from the seller in writing:

  1. Packed weight. What the courier carries and what crosses your threshold on delivery day.
  2. Net weight. What every later move involves, minus packaging.
  3. Packed dimensions. The box that has to pass through the route.

If any of the three is missing, ask before purchasing — a move planned around a guess is not planned. And note what these numbers are not: none of them judges whether you can handle them. They are facts to plan around, exactly like weather.

The route facts

  • Every door on the path, measured at its narrowest point, including intermediate doors people forget.
  • Stairs: turn geometry and landing size against the box's longest side.
  • Elevator interior, if the route uses one — interior, not door frame.
  • Floor surfaces en route: what the box slides or rolls over, and what it must not.

The people plan

  • Who is present on delivery day, and during which window.
  • Who helps with which legs of the move — threshold, stairs, final placement.
  • What the fallback is if the window or the help falls through: rescheduling policy, holding at a pickup point, or another day.

Solo moves are a planning condition like any other: they shift which forms stay realistic, which is information, not a judgement. The space check reads them as data.

After delivery day

The moves that matter most are the routine ones — storage to use and back. Check:

  • The path between storage place and use place, cleared and measured.
  • Whether the routine involves doors, thresholds or level changes.
  • A re-stowing sequence you can repeat without a project each time.

Work through the delivery-route group of the specification checklist to make this concrete, then run the space check to see what your moving conditions imply for the form direction.
